Editorial on the expanding frontiers of sports psychiatry

A new editorial by Prof. Markus Gerber and colleagues highlights how the field of sports psychiatry continues to mature from a specialized intersection of psychiatry and sports medicine into a fully formed scientific discipline that addresses the entire continuum of athlete mental health, from prevention and early detection to recovery and performance optimization. Sports psychiatry now encompasses neurobiological, psychosocial, ethical, and the cultural dimensions of sport. Today, sports psychiatry constitutes a discipline that is not only treating illness and mental health issues, but that is also shaping the environments that sustain psychological well-being and human performance in sport.
