New book publication: KaziKidz Teaching Material for Foundation Phase

Physical activity contributes to the development of physical competence and fitness as well as to the child’s cognitive, social and emotional wellbeing. Physical Education (PE) plays a crucial role in the holistic education and development of children. Yet, in many schools from marginalised neighbourhoods, PE is not given the recognition and importance it deserves.

For this reason, the KaziKidz teaching material was developed for teachers, principals, school staff or for those responsible from the Department of Education, in order to contribute to the quality of PE in these schools. The mascots Thandi and Kazi as well as lesson plans in red, blue and green guide the user through the content, whether it is teaching material for Moving-to-music, Physical Education or Health, Hygiene and Nutrition. The exercises and games are easy to use, do not require a lot of material and are met with joy and enthusiasm by the learners. The teaching material was developed by a team of South African and Swiss experts. The project was supported by the Novartis Foundation. The KaziKidz lessons meet the requirements of the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and are endorsed by the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Education. It will be integrated into the South African Council of Educator’s (SACE) officially accredited Short Learning Program (SLP) for South African elementary teachers.

A short printed (406 pages) as well as a long online version (590 pages) of the KaziKidz Foundation Phase book have been published by Nelson Mandela University Press and African Sun Media Publishing House. The book will be available here:
